DJ Kish “Electrician by Day, DJ by Night”

Music has played a significant role in my life, assisted by the fortune of having two elder sisters, and listening to Bhangra and Bollywood. Throughout the decade of the nineties, my sisters ensured they were up to speed with the Indian music scene, through following Indian radio, participating in Indian nightlife and watching movies. This influence spurned and ultimately blossomed a passion for Indian music. I am proficient in the language of Sindhi, through everyday use at home since a young age. My Hindi was acquired through watching many Bollywood movies. I vividly recall travelling to India in my teens and relatives laughing and asking: You’re listening to Bhangra, but do you understand any off it?” The answer: no. Bhangra music was and remains my favourite type of music- but not because of the lyrics, but the musicality of it- the beats, the rhythm, the texture- all combining to give an unparalleled vibe. And, it is for precisely this reason, that I named my business “Indian Vibes Entertainment”.

My complementary passion for R’n’B and Hip Hop began during high school. From the age of twenty, my DJ career took off. On NYE 2006, I made a request to the DJ for him to play some R’n’B and Hip Hop, as some of my friends desired a mix in music. I offered to bring some CDs, and he replied “Sure you can”. This was a wish that materialised. I always had a CD folder ready to go with a mix of R’n’B, Hip Hop, Bollywood and Bhangra. At the end of the night we exchanged business cards and two days later, I received a phone call: “Kish, do you want a job?”

My interest in taking photos and video? The credit must be extended to my dad. I would have to thank my dad for that. Whenever we travelled overseas or attended even a private function here in Sydney, he would, without fail, bring either the still or video camera to capture the highlights at every function. Here is another story: when I was 12 years old, I was in India for my cousin’s wedding. My mother forgot to bring the video to the reception, and I was unable to do what I loved- taking video. I was devastated and sat crying in a corner!

Alongside my passions for music, photos and videos, I am a licensed electrician by day which has proven to be more than useful when dealing with the inevitable challenges at a venue or with equipment.

Today, I am a renowned DJ with my unique selection of music and provision of diverse media coverage at some of the most hip and happening birthdays, weddings, engagements, community & cultural functions, private functions and dance parties.
